On Monday, Miguel Almiron and his international teammates began their Copa America campaign in a challenging group (top two of four advance to the knockout stages, the last eight). The game in Houston began at 11 p.m. UK time. Paraguay made a strong start against Colombia, one of the tournament’s favorites, and Enciso came close to scoring.

That weakness in the air was further underlined 10 minutes later when from a corner Jefferson Lerma headed Colombia into a two-goal lead.

Paraguay had only won three of their last 14 matches and only scored two goals in their most recent nine internationals, leading many to expect Miguel Almiron and his teammates to falter against Colombia, who were unbeaten in 23 and had won their last eight matches. Despite Julio Enciso halving the deficit on 69 minutes, Paraguay was unable to score an equalizer.

The final stats showed that Paraguay had more overall shots (12 v 11), on target (3 v 3), and corners (3-3). Colombia only had an edge in putting the ball in the net. Miguel Amiron played the first 59 minutes before being subbed as part of a double change. Paraguay will face Brazil in a massive match in Las Vegas, possibly against Bruno Guimaraes, at 2 a.m. UK time.

Then the third and final group match is against Costa Rica in Austin, a UK kick-off time of 2 am again on Wednesday 3 July.
