Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid’s goalkeeper, has been suspended for one year due to doping.

The suspension will include all football-related activities at the national and international levels starting on July 5.

The Slovenian international took furosemide “unwittingly” after feeling ill, according to Atletico, and he himself described it as “the result of human mistake” after an out-of-competition check revealed the drug in his urine.

“On June 24, Jan Oblak felt unwell in the morning.

He desired to take a pill. However, he unintentionally took Lasimac, a medication that his wife had already been prescribed, according to Atletico statement.

The Club declared their intention to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The club went on, “Oblak took his wife’s medication by mistake after using the product, which prompted UEFA to take action against the goalkeeper.” According to the disciplinary board of the football organization, he had no intention of cheating.

Nonetheless, the European Football Association feels that athletes have an obligation to make sure that no illegal chemicals enter their bodies at all times in accordance with current anti-doping regulations.”

In a statement posted on Instagram on Monday afternoon, Jan Oblak said he hoped to resume playing shortly after his struggle to clear his name.
