DONE DEAL: Liverpool finally seal £100m deal for Newcastle Anthony Gordon as clubs reach agreement of terms

Liverpool would need to make a compelling transfer proposal to prize Anthony Gordon away from Newcastle United. But if it could reach an agreement, it would have few worries about the winger settling in — with a ‘best mate’ already at the club.

There would be no chance of home-sickness: Anthony Gordon was born and raised in the city, even coming through the Liverpool youth system before transferring to Everton. He has previously cited both Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah as role models.

But on top of that, Gordon already has a close connection with a member of the Liverpool ranks. Speaking to The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, he named his best friends in football earlier this year.

“I’d say I’ve got three,” Gordon told Gary Neville. “Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international.”

Gordon would subsequently clarify that Jones is a ‘international’ mate, however the duo, who are separated by less than a month in age, did briefly overlap in the Liverpool youth setup until the Newcastle winger was released as a 10-year-old. Fast forward to last summer, and both were vital players as England won the U21 European Championship.

Jones led the team to victory, and Gordon was England’s joint-top scorer, one of three players to score twice in the tournament. Neither is eligible at the U21 level anymore, and while Gordon has two senior caps, Jones is still waiting for his first.

There’s a potential the two will team up in the senior version of the competition this summer, but Jones’ injury during the last international break has hampered his chances of receiving a late call-up.

If the two are to rejoin at Liverpool, it will require a large transfer price. The Daily Star reckons it would take a bid of $126 million (£100 million/€117 million) to pique Newcastle’s interest, despite the fact that the Magpies are under pressure to sell ‘one or two’ key players in order to meet financial requirements.
