REPORT:Kansas City Chiefs Star Named One of Best Players at His Position
Kansas City Chiefs’ Joe Thuney Named One of NFL’s Top Offensive Guards
With three-time Super Bowl winner and MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading one of the league’s most
explosive and talented squads, the Kansas City Chiefs are poised to win a record-tying third straight Lombardi
Trophy this coming season.
Although Mahomes will play a major role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl window, one of the players most crucial to the
team is perhaps the one tasked with keeping him upright and healthy. Or, at least, among the best in the NFL in his
position.
Prior to the 2024 season, Pro Football Focus ranked Joe Thuney as the best offensive lineman in the league.
Thuney has been one of the most dominant offensive linemen in the game for a long time.
Thomas Valentine writes for PFF that “Thuney has cemented himself as one of the NFL’s best guards.” “Offering
Patrick Mahomes faultless cover for the previous three seasons and earning selections to the first and second teams
of the All-Pro team for the previous two seasons.” In 2023, Thuney’s 83.4 pass-blocking grade topped the guards,
while his 74.6 PFF total grade placed him ninth overall.Although Thuney is a superb run-blocker, his reputation is
primarily in pass protection.
In 2023, he gave up only 4.6% of the pressure rate, and in the last two years, he has outperformed every other guard
in the NFL in pass-blocking grade (88.8).
The potential of a group of skill players that now includes Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, youngster Xavier Worthy,
and an All-Pro tight end in Travis Kelce at Mahomes‘ disposal will be greatly unlocked if Thuney can play at an
outstanding level.
