Sunderland ace emerges on radar of Southampton

 Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has emerged on the radar of Southampton, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Since that the transfer market is officially open, Sunderland may have to fight to stay onto their top spot this summer.

For the past few years, he has been their first pick among the sticks.

Patterson, 24, came up through the Black Cats’ academy ranks and was a fixture for them at several different youth levels.

He also had a loan period with Notts County gaining experience.

With 46 of those appearances coming from the previous season,

he has now made 123 appearances for the North East team across all competitions.

Given how important Patterson is to their first team, Sunderland won’t want to lose him.

He made his debut with their first squad in 2021, and he hasn’t looked back.

According to a report by The Sun, Sheffield United has also been linked to a move for him recently in the wake of their relegation from the top flight,

but it is unclear if the Blades will make a move.

Since Patterson’s contract expires in June 2028, Sunderland is under no obligation to sell him anytime soon

and can hold out for the best offer to come along before considering releasing him.

The man from North Shields signed an agreement as late as 2022 in order to stave off possible interest from other teams.

He made his debut in an EFL Trophy match against Fleetwood Town back in 2020,

and under former manager Tony Mowbray, he assisted them in winning promotion from League One a few years ago.

What next for Sunderland man?

It remains to be seen if Southampton moves to sign Patterson. It might rely on what transpires with Gavin Bazuna, who is hurt.

Sunderland will be trying to keep him on for a minimum of another 12 months.
