Report: Andrea Belotti to Como for €4 Million
There was a lot of hype surrounding Andrea Belotti’s free agent move to Roma. For years Il Gallo
had been surgically dismantling defences all across the Italian peninsula, and his goal scoring
record at Torino probably went a little too far. This man has developed into an anomaly in European
football these days: an emblem for a team in the middle of the table. His transfer to Rome on a free agency felt like the missing element for a Roma attack that more than anything else seemed to need depth.
Sadly, unless you consider the missing piece to be anything like to a black hole, Belotti was not the missing piece. But the Italian international and former Palermo player did not make an impression during his stay in Rome, and it now appears that his time there is coming to an end. Belotti is
reportedly relocating to the recently promoted Como 1907, according to Filippo Biafora of Il Tempo.
Since Belotti was on loan at Fiorentina beginning in February and, to be honest, was not missed at
the Olimpico, the Giallorossi won’t be too badly affected by this departure. A far cry from the player
he was at his best, Belotti managed just 10 goals in 68 appearances across all competitions while he
was at Rome. In fact, Belotti’s lack of league goals for the Giallorossi in his debut season in Rome
might be the most enduring memory Romanisti have of him. He was supposed to play a central role
in an attack that was supposed to be among the finest in Europe, if not all of Europe, and he fell short
of expectations.
At thirty, Belotti is probably close to the end of his elite career, but a strong season with a minnow
like Como might significantly rejuvenate him. After visiting Como in the autumn of 2022, I can say
with certainty that I wouldn’t refuse a transfer there; it’s one of the most breathtaking locations I’ve
ever been. However, it’s inevitable that as we reflect on his time in Rome, the question that comes to mind is “what if”—what if Belotti had visited Rome earlier? What if his performance in front of goal
had been better during that first season? Would a more fortunate and youthful Belotti have achieved
the same level of legend in Rome as he did for Torino?
