Liverpool’s transfer setback as Atletico Madrid begins discussions with key defensive target

As David Hancko begins negotiations with Atletico Madrid on a summer transfer, Liverpool appears destined to miss out on yet ANOTHER possible defensive addition.

Since joining De Kuip from Sparta Prague in 2022, the 26-year-old Feyenoord defender has been a revelation, thriving as a left-sided center back and occasionally a left back.

The Slovakian international seems to fit the Reds’ needs as they look to make changes to their defense under new transfer coordinators Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.

Three hours ago, Peter Staunton wrote, “Liverpool is set to cash in on striker as Chelsea considers activating £65 million release clause.”

Hancko, a left-footed player who can also play left back,

could have relieved some of the pressure on first-choice left back Andy Robertson and covered for Virgil van Dijk at center back.

The agents of the former Fiorentina player even stated earlier this year that they had discussed a possible summer transfer with Liverpool, even before Arne Slot was appointed head coach.

During his tenure as manager of Feyenoord, Slot had a soft spot for Hancko, who helped the 45-year-old win both a KNVB Beker and an Eredivisie championship.

He has also performed admirably so far at Euro 2024, masterfully handling Johan Bakayoko,

a player who was reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool,

during Slovakia’s historic victory over Belgium on the first day of play.

Tennis player Kristyna Pliskova, who is partnered with the player,

said earlier this week that Hancko would probably move on this summer and stated that she preferred Spain to Italy.

And now that HITC has confirmed negotiations between the defender and Diego Simeone’s team have started,

it looks she will get her dream.

Feyenoord has Hancko under contract until 2028,

and the team is reportedly seeking a transfer fee of about €40 million.
