After being named Leicester City’s next manager for a three-year term, Steve Cooper has pledged to ensure that the

team rises to the task of remaining in the Premier League the following season.

The former Swansea City manager, who was fired by Nottingham Forest midway through the previous campaign and

Luton Town’s relegation under Rob Edwards, will make sure that at least one Welsh manager is employed in the

premier league the following season.

After leaving Forest in December, 44-year-old Cooper had been unemployed. However, he has taken over as Enzo

Maresca’s replacement at King Power Stadium, a position he will hold until 2027.

Following Mauricio Pochettino’s exit from the Foxes at the end of the season, Maresca left the team after leading

them to promotion to the Premier League to take over at Chelsea.

After an emotional departure at the City Ground, where he led Forest back into the top tier for the first time in 23

years and held them there, Cooper has been waiting patiently to return to work.

“Joining a club with a rich history makes me very proud,” he said to Leicester’s supporters in an open letter. “I

extend my congratulations to the players and staff for their promotion to the Premier League. That’s difficult, I

know.

“Any football enthusiast can only regard the accomplishments of this club over the past few years with immense

respect.”

“What’s possible for a united club has been shown by the FA Cup of 2021 and the Premier League title of 2016.” I

don’t take that legacy lightly as the next manager.

It will be my responsibility to build on those successes and include players, staff, and fans in the process. There are

big problems ahead, but it seems like Leicester is thriving right now. I’m sure we’ll be prepared.

Leicester’s job will not be easy; in addition to the potential for a points loss, the Foxes may have to sell players in

order to meet Premier League profit and sustainability regulations.

Cooper’s first game in charge of Forest will be at home against Tottenham, who he also faced in his farewell match.

In May, he will be back at the City Ground.

Graham Potter, the former manager of Brighton and Chelsea, and Carlos Corberan of West Brom are reportedly

rumored to have been in the running for the position, but Cooper prevailed.

Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, the chairman of Leicester, stated, “We are thrilled to have Steve join Leicester City.”

Our goals for the club are very much in line with his vision for the team, which includes his ability to develop players

and employ a dynamic style of play.

“As a leader, he has the capacity to nurture the close bond that has developed between our supporters and the team—

a relationship that will be essential to us reviving the club in the Premier League.”

Cooper, a Pontypridd native, played for Wrexham before becoming one of the youngest coaches in history to get a

UEFA Pro License at the age of 27.

In September 2008, he resigned from his position as Wrexham’s head of youth development to become an academy

coach at Liverpool. He was subsequently promoted to academy manager and led the team’s Under-18s throughout

the 2012–13 season.

Before being named manager of the Under-17 team the next year, he assumed leadership of England’s Under-16

team in October 2014.

Before his team was named the FIFA Under-17 World Cup winners five months later, he guided them to the final of

the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May 2017.

Cooper became the head coach of Swansea in June 2019 and led the team to sixth place in his first season. In the

play-off semifinal, Brentford defeated the Swans over two legs.

The next season, he managed to secure fourth place and led his team to the play-off final at Wembley, where they

were defeated by Brentford.

He left in July 2021, and in September of the same year he was appointed manager of Nottingham Forest.

In his first season in command, he remarkably guided the City Ground team from the bottom of the Championship

to a fourth-place finish, which resulted in promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

The following year, he made sure Forest remained in the top division until departing the team in December 2023.
