Regis Le Bris would be a risky choice for Sunderland if appointed as Michael Beale’s successor.

Sunderland’s search for a new manager continues, with Lorient’s Regis Le Bris reportedly in the race.
Fans may doubt Le Bris’ suitability following Lorient’s relegation,

despite his past success in Ligue 1.
He may bring stylish football and youth development expertise, but is he the best fit for Sunderland’s promotion hopes?

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which offers personal opinions from FLW writers on current news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more.

Sunderland’s managerial hunt is still ongoing, and Regis Le Bris of Lorient could be the latest possibility.

The Black Cats endured a terribly dismal campaign last time out, eventually seeing them finish 16th in the table as they failed to sustain a drive for the play-offs.

Tony Mowbray was summarily dismissed by the Sunderland board in December, and Michael Beale was selected as his replacement, but he lasted only two months.

Since the former Rangers manager left in February, the club has been looking for a replacement, with Mike Dodds serving as caretaker manager for the rest of last season.

Regis Le Bris could be on Sunderland’s radar

Sunderland has been associated with a number of managers in recent months, but despite owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus declaring on June 7th that an appointment was ‘imminent’, the club remains without a head coach.

Many supporters are hoping for a swift conclusion, and some may have noted that Lorient manager Regis Le Bris is now widely favored to take over.

Of course, bookies’ odds must be interpreted with caution, but this has sparked speculation about whether he would be a good pick.

The 48-year-old’s lone senior position has been with the French club, where he had a great debut season, finishing 10th in the top flight. However, this season proved challenging, and Lorient was relegated to Ligue 2.

Sunderland would be taking risk with Le Bris

So, would he be an appropriate candidate for Sunderland? Here, our writers offer their ideas.

Chris Gallagher
This would be a dangerous decision.

Le Bris was highly regarded a year ago for steering Lorient to a 10th-place finish in Ligue 1 on a little budget in compared to many of their opponents. Furthermore, he accomplished so by playing an appealing brand of football.

However, after a year, Lorient has been demoted to the second division, therefore it is no longer an appealing job opportunity.

Sunderland fans may be disappointed given some of the names linked with the club, such as Will Still and Pascal Jansen.

That is not to argue that Le Bris would not be a good fit for Sunderland, as he has the capacity to develop young players and produce a club that plays elegant football.

But the Black Cats need to be more than that, and whomever is in charge next season will be entrusted with earning promotion or at least keeping the team in the play-offs, and I’m not sure Le Bris is the guy for the job.

After months of hunting for Beale’s long-term replacement, there will undoubtedly be doubts about whether Le Bris is the one chosen by the hierarchy.

Le Bris’ stock has slipped since he was connected with the Leeds United post prior to Daniel Farke’s appointment, making this a risk for Sunderland after a bad year.

Sunderland’s managerial search has been ongoing for some time, and when a selection is announced, the club will face widespread criticism if it is not a popular choice.

It may seem cruel to discount Le Bris at this juncture, but if he joins, some Sunderland fans will be asking serious questions about why he is a target now, given the season he has overseen in France.

Of sure, he can work with young players and play good football, which fits the Sunderland approach. However, advocates are hesitant to rely on that at this time. You get the impression that they want a more inspiring candidate to guide them into 2024/2025.

Most Championship appointments involve some kind of danger, but this one has me leaning toward the riskier side at this moment.
