Tottenham release punishment on Rodrigo Bentancur following a racial remark directed by club captain Son Heung-min.

While watching Uruguayan TV, a broadcaster approached Bentancur for a Spurs shirt.

Retorted, “Sonny’s? Given their similar appearances, it might also be Sonny’s relative.”

Later, Bentancur issued an online apology, calling his remarks a “very bad joke”.

Spurs added in a statement: “The Club has been offering help in guaranteeing a favorable result on the situation following a remark made by Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology.

“This will involve providing all participants with additional education in keeping with our diversity, equality, and inclusion goals.

“We wholeheartedly endorse Sonny’s belief that he can put the situation behind him and turn his attention to the upcoming season.

“We take great pride in the diversified, international fan base and playing squads we have.

“Discrimination of any kind has no place at our Club, within our game or within wider society.”

Bentancur posted the following on Instagram: “Sonny brother! I’m sorry for what transpired; it was just a really poor prank.

“You are aware of my affection for you, and I promise never to treat you badly or injure anyone else. Brother, you have my affection.”

Since joining Tottenham in 2022, Bentancur has made 69 appearances; he captained the team for 25 of those games last season.

Subsequently, the South Korean player and Spurs star accepted his teammate’s apology.

“I have talked with Lolo,” the son stated. He has apologized and acknowledged that he made a mistake.

“Lolo would never mean to say something offensive on purpose. We are brothers, and not a single thing has changed.

“We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre season to fight for our club as one.”
