DONE DEAL: Newcastle United finally seal a £60 million deal for a new contract with a key star targeted by Arsenal and Chelsea.

Newcastle United are closing in on agreeing a new contract with key forward Alexander Isak, according to reports.

Isak joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad for £60m (per the BBC) in the summer of 2022. Since then, the 46-time Sweden international has notched 35 goals and five assists in 67 appearances across all competitions, helping the club into the Champions League for the 2023/24 campaign.

Newcastle, on the other hand, was unable to reproduce its success from the previous season, exiting Europe at the group stage after being put in a nightmare section including PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan, and falling to seventh in the Premier League table, eight points behind the top four.

There have been concerns that a lack of continental participation next season, along with his great form — finishing second only to Erling Haaland (27) and Cole Palmer (22) in the Premier League Golden Boot race with 21 goals — will turn Isak’s head. Arsenal and Chelsea have both expressed interest in signing him.

Newcastle progressing with Isak talks

Isak’s current contract with St. James’ Park extends until the 2027/28 season. However, according to HITC, Newcastle is in talks to extend that deal even further.

According to the source, Newcastle’s major goal is to secure Isak’s long-term future before the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, and the current offer would finally rank the striker among the club’s top earners.

Bruno Guimaraes, another Newcastle player linked with a move away, is said to be attracting serious interest from Premier League champions Manchester City.

But while the Brazilian midfielder has a release clause in his contract, Isak does not, giving Newcastle much more power and flexibility when it comes to negotiations.
