Celtic will put a promising youngster on trial for a week during an academy camp to test his abilities.

The Bhoys are actively looking for first-team signings this summer; nevertheless, identifying potential stars at the younger level is equally crucial in enhancing long-term viability.

Celtic’s goal must be to develop youngsters with the hope of one day offering them a road into the senior squad, and Brendan Rodgers has indicated that he intends to internally promote Lennoxtown graduates during his second stint.

Now, information has surfaced about a prodigious talent who has been given the opportunity to impress on trial at the club.

Shay Reid to go on trial with Celtic

According to Belfast Live, Cliftonville teenager Shay Reid will go on trial with Celtic Under-18 following a productive season at Under-16 and Under-18 levels, where he scored 36 goals in total.

The 15-year-old will train with the squad before playing a friendly match, and he will also represent County Down in the Super Cup NI at the end of the month.

He is also being pursued by Hibernian and numerous other clubs, and he has played for Northern Ireland at the youth level during his time in Belfast.

Speaking in April, Cliftonville’s academy head Paul Smyth gave some light on his predicament, stating: “We have three other boys heading over to Hibs – Ollie McCart, Oisin Gamble, and Owen Mahoney.

Shay Reid will also be joining Celtic in the coming weeks, as will Eamonn Tohill from Derby. So we’ve got six or seven players heading across the water.

“It is a credit to the guys’ performance for us, as well as their enthusiasm towards football. Talent only gets you so far; you need hunger, ambition, and a determination to succeed, which all of these lads possess.”

Reid hopes to seize his opportunity to impress at Celtic and win a prolonged stay to develop under academy personnel, with Adam Asghar due to take over as Under-18 manager.
