Aston Villa agree £70m Ian Maatsen deal – sources
After reaching a personal terms agreement with the Chelsea full-back,
Aston Villa is getting closer to announcing Ian Maatsen as their newest addition, sources have informed Football Insider.
The 22-year-old, who made it to the Champions League final while on loan at
Borussia Dortmund in the second half of the previous season, has seen his status soar.
Maatsen will agree to a contract worth over £100,000 per week for five years,
with a one-year extension option at the club.
The transaction, including fees and wages, is worth around £70 million should that come to be.
Football Insider reported on June 16 that Maatsen,
who has played just 12 senior games for Chelsea since joining the team in 2019,
was a topic of everyday discussion between the two teams.
The left-sided player’s crucial senior experience, which he obtained via loans at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley,
prepared him well for a fruitful, if brief, stay at Dortmund.
Maatsen has long been admired by Unai Emery,
who made it a point to include him in the Aston Villa squad prior to the preseason.
The youngster was eager to leave Chelsea permanently in order to find a place to settle in his career,
as Football Insider first reported on May 6.
Dortmund was first believed to be involved, as they had first dibs on a deal that has since expired.
After receiving a windfall that Football Insider claimed to be worth £40 million for Aston Villa
simply by making it to the Champions League the following season [Stefan Borson, June 19],
Emery has approved a transfer for a player whose trajectory is steepening and whose future transfer value could be enormous.
