After spending the 2023–24 season on loan at AFC Wimbledon, where he made 48 appearances overall,

Bass is moving to League Two on a permanent basis. After the team was promoted back to the Championship in 2022,

the 26-year-old from Portsmouth moved to Wearside. However, he only made two professional appearances because he mostly

supported current No. 1 goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Bass made news in October 2022 when he played for the under-21s in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

In one of his two appearances for the club’s academy side, Bass scored the equalising goal for Sunderland deep into stoppage time.

Bass later acknowledged that he handled the ball while scoring in a play that was thereafter referred to as

Bass is eager to play regularly in the 2024–25 season after spending the previous one on loan.

However, he cannot guarantee a spot at the Stadium of Light, as Patterson is still regarded as the team’s top player despite Premier League interest.

Moore, a 34-year-old custodian whose contract with Coventry City expires at the end of the month,

is expected to become a free agent. Sunderland and Sheffield United are reportedly close to reaching an agreement.

Potential additions Moore and Nathan Bishop would give Sunderland’s goalkeeping staff more experience and challenge Patterson more in the upcoming campaign.

In addition, Sunderland boasts two highly regarded goalkeepers in their academy system: Adam Richardson,

who played for Graeme Murty’s under-21 team that advanced to the Premier League 2 play-off final, and Matt Young,

who won Darlington’s young player of the year award after an outstanding loan in the National League North.

Sports director Kristjaan Speakman of Sunderland expressed his disappointment over Bass’s departure,

saying, “Alex had a successful loan last season and he is eager to continue playing regular football going forward.”

“We decided that this move was the best course of action for all parties after debating a number of possibilities moving into the summer,

taking into account both Alex’s future and the ongoing development of our younger goalkeepers.

We at SAFC hope Alex has the greatest possible luck as he moves on to new endeavours.
