A player who has been in six European Championships, Cristiano Ronaldo, made history on Tuesday when Portugal took against Czechia to start their 2024 campaign.

Ronaldo made his European debut on home soil in 2004 when he first joined Portugal’s squad and scored the tournament’s opening goal against Czechia. Twenty years later, in the first game of Ronaldo’s sixth title, Portugal takes against the same side.

“A new chapter in our history begins now. I have happy memories of my first day with the national team—a trip that was full of obstacles and successes. “I am privileged to be a part of a talented and driven team of champions,” Ronaldo wrote in a post on X.

“We make dreams come true by uniting our strength and support. Together, let’s strive for yet another victory. Joined, we can accomplish anything. Portugal, go!”

Ronaldo has the most goals of any player in the competition’s history with 14 Euro goals; his personal best is five goals in a single campaign from the 2020 season.

At 41 years and 113 days, Portugal’s Pepe, a center-back, became the oldest player in the history of the European Championship on Tuesday as well.

Pepe breaks the mark set by former Hungary goalkeeper Gábor Király, who competed in their round-of-16 loss to Belgium in 2016 at the age of 40 years and 86 days.

Even with players like Gonçalo Ramos, Rafael Leão, and João Félix in Portugal’s attacking squad, Ronaldo is still the nation’s most productive striker and will captain the team during the competition.
