the first of the now annual fixtures for the Peter Handyside trophy.

As part of their preseason schedule, City’s youth will host the Mariners at Clayton Wood on Saturday, July 20.

Annual games between the two teams will be held in honour of former Potters captain Peter Handyside, who passed away in February.

Every year, members of Peter’s family attend the game to give the trophy to the winning team, who gets to keep the season’s silverware.

The yearly match, according to Handyside’s former teammate and City Academy Director Gareth Owen,

is a suitable way to honour a player who was an important member of the Stoke City club during his two seasons in the Potteries.

“We were heartbroken as a Club to hear of Peter’s passing in February,” Owen added.

“This is the ideal way to remember his legacy and achievements as a former Stoke City captain.

Also  was well regarded throughout his time as a Potter.”

It will be nice to have Peter’s family attend every game and to give the winning teams their trophies, he continued.

Every year, we are honoured to organise these matches between two of his previous teams.
