Alonso set to get one over Slot as Leverkusen push ahead with plans to sign Liverpool target

As Bayer Leverkusen prepares to move forward with intentions to pursue a player who has been linked to Liverpool,

Xabi Alonso might have an advantage over Arne Slot.

Alonso was reportedly targeted by Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp,

but in the end, the Spanish coach chose to remain in Germany.

At this point, Liverpool and Leverkusen are facing off over a transfer target,

and it appears as though Alonso’s team may prevail.

The defender is a cheap alternative for teams trying to sign him because of his €22.5 million (£19 million) release clause,

Florian Plettenberg claims that Alonso and Anton have already spoken over the phone at least twice on the possible trade.

Leverkusen is reportedly moving forward with their aspirations to sign the Stuttgart star,

and they have even made him an offer for a deal that would last until 2028.

Although Borussia Dortmund is also vying for the 27-year-old’s signature,

it appears as though Leverkusen is now in the lead.

Prior to the upcoming season,

Liverpool will probably focus on other targets if a deal cannot be reached for Anton.

Joel Matip has already departed the team,

and numerous sources continue to believe that Virgil van Dijk’s long-term future is still uncertain.

The Reds are currently unsure of the Dutch star’s long-term future as he

approaches the final year of his contract and negotiations to extend have stalled.

Although Slot’s team has been considering a number of other candidates in recent months,

Anton would have been a good option for Liverpool to hire.

Leny Yoro, a center-back for Lille, has long been a target, but the Frenchman supposedly would like to go with Real Madrid.

Although Enzo Maresca’s team has no intention of selling Levi Colwill,

who is contracted with Chelsea until 2029, the Reds are still keeping an eye on the 21-year-old.
