Sunderland are in talks to sign Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore as a

replacement for Anthony Patterson.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, who provided an update on the

Black Cats’ search for new players.

The Wearside outfit’s main goal right now will be to appoint a new permanent head coach,

something they haven’t had since Michael Beale was fired in February.

They have already seen several links with other potential candidates to take over at the

Stadium of Light fall through, putting additional pressure on the club to make

an appointment.

Despite this, it appears that the Black Cats are currently going forward with their summer

transfer plans, including player recruitment.

According to the most recent update, Sunderland are now in talks about potentially

signing Moore, with the summer transfer market being open.

It is believed that if the 34-year-old moves to The Stadium of Light, it will be to

provide support for Patterson, who has made the number one place his own in recent years.

Moore is set to be a free agent this summer, with Coventry confirming at the end

of the 2023/24 season that he has been released following the expiration of his contract.

The goalkeeper joined the Sky Blues in the summer of 2021 and was a regular during his first season,

but has struggled to find game time in the following two seasons.

If a deal is done, Moore could become Sunderland’s first senior acquisition of the summer transfer season, as the club has yet to enter the market due to its concentration on the manager hunt.

The Black Cats finished the 2023/24 season 16th in the final Championship standings,

six points above the relegation zone.

Coventry finished the season tenth in the second-tier table,

nine points behind the play-off positions.

Simon Moore might be a logical addition for Sunderland.

If Sunderland is successful in landing Moore, it appears that it will be a good move.

The 34-year-old has extensive experience in the Championship and League One,

where he has consistently proven to be a reliable goalkeeper.

He might thus be a dependable backup for Patterson, while Moore’s experience could

serve as a learning ground for the Black Cats’ younger first-choice option.

Indeed, Moore’s added goalkeeping depth might allow Sunderland to look into loan

moves for players like Alex Bass or Nathan Bishop, who could benefit

from the extra playing time.
