Sunderland have reached an agreement in principle with Chris Rigg,

but he is waiting to see who the next head coach will be before committing his future to the club, according to James Copley.

Sunderland desperately need to improve this season.

The Black Cats finished 16th last season following a disastrous second half of the season.

Michael Beale’s brief term in the north east was bad, and Mike Dodds’ interim reign was even worse.

Rigg, 16, enjoyed a breakout season last time out. He played 21 senior games and scored twice in the championship.

The England youth international turns 17 tomorrow and will be ready to sign professional contracts with a club.

Sunderland are anxious to keep him and have accepted a deal in principle,

but some of the greatest names in football are keeping an eye on him,

and Rigg wants to know who the next manager will be on Wearside before signing a contract with the club.

A huge asset

Rigg, who is still extremely young, has the potential to be a key part of Sunderland’s success next season.

The excellent midfielder should once again be a fixture in the first team, and the more he plays and impresses,

the higher his worth will increase, which can only benefit Sunderland.

Rigg played more senior football than most 16-year-olds last season, and he should keep that in mind when he decides where he wants to go this summer.

Consistent football is critical, and if he joins a well-known club, he will most likely not be engaged with the first squad right away.
