Confirmed : Southampton officially Signs Star Out Of Contract – club wont escape defeats
Sportwitness reports that Saints are closing in on a deal to sign Brentford midfielder Saman Ghoddos, who is out of contract.
This news will have many Southampton residents saying, “Who!!!”
The September-born Iranian midfielder has been at Brentford since the 20/21 campaign.
He came on loan in August and was given a permanent contract in January 2021. During that season,
he was instrumental in Brentford’s ascent to the Premier League.
He struggled to earn playing time in the Premier League, and during the three seasons the
Bees have played in the top division, he has mostly been a bench warmer.
He was a member of the matchday squad for 32 of the 34 Premier League games played this past season.
He started seven of those games, entered the game for the remaining 12,
and was not used as a substitute for the remaining 13.
While Ghoddos is primarily an attacking midfielder, he has also been used as a full back and winger.
On the surface, it is difficult to understand why Saints appear to be planning to sign this player.
Of course, it is a free transfer, so costs should be minimal.
We appear to be taking a cheap shot because of his versatility, but I don’t think certain
Saints will take kindly to that.
However, it should be remembered that Russell Martin is assembling a squad rather than a team.
Signing Ghoddos and Adam Lallana is a wise move; one-year contracts are affordable,
and having an extra experienced player on the roster may come in handy during what
promises to be a challenging season.
July 1st is when most serious business will be done, but after that date
Southampton needs to make some excellent experienced acquisitions while they are still at the top of their game.
