Celtic value Matt O’Riley at ‘record price’ as Atletico Madrid open talks ahead of potential return bid amid Inter interest

A loan to purchase deal for Matt O’Riley has previously been rejected by ATLETICO MADRID.

And now, according to reports in Spain, Celtic is seeking “even more” than the rumoured

£17 million they were rejected for back in January.

According to reports, the Hoops have set a far higher price for the Danish midfield player.

The 23-year-old’s departure will require a price greater than the £25 million Arsenal spent on

Kieran Tierney, according to media in Madrid.

However, AS claims that Diego Simeone’s team is “very close” to the midfield player.

In the winter window, Girona and Inter Milan were also strongly linked, but only the red side

of the Spanish capital submitted an official bid.

One that the Celtic board and Brendan Rodgers rejected right away.

But Atletico may make another attempt to get the midfield player this summer, and it is already

thought that they are moving to make room in the team for him.

It is rumoured that they have begun contract termination negotiations with Saul Niguez, the younger brother of former Rangers winger Aaron.

According to Celtic, the Parkhead player of the year is valued at a whopping €40 million, but AS

suggests that may allow Atletico return to the table with about €20 million to spend.

After making two impressive plays against the Spanish in the Champions League last season,

O’Riley inspired the team to submit a proposal six months after Leeds’ audacious attempt to sign

the English star for £9 million had failed.

Brighton and Southampton, who were just promoted, are reportedly keeping a close eye on him this summer. Interest is also reportedly high south of the border.

Russell Martin, the manager of Saints, was O’Riley’s previous boss at MK Dons before he signed a

£1.5 million contract to join Celtic at the beginning of 2022.

However, he’s thought to be concerned that West Ham and Newcastle, two high-spending teams,

may launch a bidding war for O’Riley.
