Sunderland making moves to seal deal with premier league striker
Ex-Liverpool man monitors Sunderland & potential Middlesbrough boost
This week’s North East Notes discuss the most recent developments in Sunderland’s head coach search as well as the
future of a previous striker target for the Black Cats.
We’ll start with Middlesbrough and go on to Newcastle’s pursuit of Michael Olise and what that might indicate about
what we might see this summer.
MIDDLESBROUGH: THIS SUMMER COULD BE A POTENTIAL CASH BOOST
This summer, Middlesbrough will be closely monitoring the situation involving a former player,
and they increasingly seem to stand to gain financially.
In the upcoming weeks, Swansea City should expect bids and interest in former Boro defender Nathan Wood.
Two summers ago, Wood moved from the Riverside to Swansea after former manager Chris Wilder approved the
teenage center-half’s departure.
Swansea manager Luke Williams believes the 22-year-old has made an impression in Wales and proven to be one of
the greatest central defenders in the Championship.
Russell Martin, the previous manager of Swansea, made two bids of up to £10 million,
but Saints were unable to convince Wood to transfer to St Mary’s with him.
Swansea is prepared for Wood’s departure this summer even though they were able to hang onto him at the time.
Wood’s contract with the Swans was recently extended for an additional year, although manager Williams
acknowledges that bids and interest will inevitably arise, with Southampton anticipated to make another attempt.
Williams stated last week that “young players playing a lot of Championship football at a decent level will always
attract attention from suitors.”
“It is fair to say that some players have drawn interest, but I can’t talk any more about that at this time.”
Williams had previously acknowledged that Swansea would need to make a move this summer since Wood might
become a free agent in a year.
