Manchester City eye 25-goal Atletico Madrid target as replacement for 98-appearance star
Artem Dovbyk of Girona, a striker, has been selected by Manchester City as Erling Haaland’s
potential successor at the Etihad Stadium.
With an emphasis on long-term Manchester City transfer goals, Etihad managers have been
creating comprehensive succession plans in a variety of areas. The multi-club network of City
Football Group is also helping to nurture future stars.
The club replaced all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero with Erling Haaland in 2022 after
paying £51 million to Borussia Dortmund; however, the Norwegian striker may eventually be
released from his contract for £175 million.
Haaland, who signed a five-year contract extension with the Sky Blues in 2027, will enter the final
two years of his current Manchester City contract in 2025. The 23-year-old has scored 90 goals in
98 games since coming at the Etihad Stadium.
Although Manchester City doesn’t anticipate losing Haaland anytime soon, the forward from
Girona, Artem Dovbyk, is thought to be the long-term replacement for the Norway international.
Dovbyk, the leading scorer in La Liga this season, helped Girona—the Spanish sister club of
Manchester City—qualify for the UEFA Champions League by scoring 25 goals and dishing out 10
assists in three competitions.
The Ukrainian joined Girona in the summer of last year, but he is currently in negotiations to sign
with Atletico Madrid, who intend to acquire a new striker during the summer transfer window.
HITC claim that an agreement with Atletico Madrid will ‘hopefully’ include a buy-back clause,
after Manchester City officials identified the 26-year-old as a possible replacement for Haaland in
east Manchester.
As Diego Simeone looks to expand his attacking options ahead of the new campaign in August,
Atletico Madrid has also set their sights on Julian Alvarez, the other striker for Manchester City.
