This Is the Reason Derrick White Called the Boston Celtics Coach a “Sicko”

In Game 3, the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks and Luka Doncic against all odds to establish a decisive lead in the NBA Finals. Derrick White referred to head coach Joe Mazzulla as a sicko following the game for a specific reason.

In spite of a tense fourth quarter in which they almost lost their 21-point advantage, the Celtics were on the verge of winning an incredible 18th NBA title in Game 3.

They defeated the Mavericks 106-99, but not before battling to take a decisive 3-0 lead in the series. This puts them in a nearly unavoidable position because no team in NBA history has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit.

The Mavs had a glimmer of optimism going into the game since Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis missed Games 1 and 2 due to an injury. Dallas took advantage of this early opening and used the paint to build a comfortable 22-9 lead.

But the Celtics gradually got closer, trailing the Mavericks by only one point at the end of the first quarter and matching their performance in the second. Beginning the fourth quarter with a 91-70 lead, Boston increased their lead even further.

However, over the course of over eight minutes, Doncic and company put together a 22-2 run that cut the lead to just one point. But with 4:12 left in the game, the Slovenian star fouled out, ending their momentum.

Derrick White, a wing for Boston, talked with media about Game 3 following the game. Noa Dalzell, a former player for the San Antonio Spurs, posted a video on X that showed how they nearly lost their lead and how head coach Joe Mazzulla felt about it.

Joe Mazzulla reportedly relished the fact that the Celtics nearly wasted the lead, according to Derrick White:

Because he’s a sicko, most likely.

During Boston’s postseason run this year, White has solidified his position as one of the team’s essential players. The star player for the Celtics has averaged 17.5 points on 40% shooting from outside the arc, 4.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.9 blocks in 17 postseason games so far.

Whether Boston completes the sweep or Dallas extends the series in Game 4 is yet to be determined. Either way, White and Mazzulla will go all out to win their first titles in their individual careers.
