The former England and Chelsea midfielder’s odds have dropped over the past 24 hours, making him a favorite with the bookies, but he isn’t being considered to lead the Black Cats.

The previous week, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus expressed optimism that a head coach appointment was “imminent”.

Sunderland executives think highly of QPR manager Marti Cifuentes, but there’s no sign as of yet that an offer has been made.

There have been ongoing negotiations this week over Sunderland’s other top targets.

It’s still unknown what Rene Maric’s future holds. The 31-year-old Austrian has been noticed by Sunderland since the beginning of the recruitment process.

He is currently in charge of Bayern Munich’s Under-19 team. Though it hasn’t been announced yet,

he was anticipated to step up to coach Vincent Kompany’s first team at the Allianz Arena. Sunderland is still keeping a careful eye on Maric’s circumstances.
