After Carlos Alcaraz, 21, won his third Grand Slam championship at the French Open, Roger Federer’s former coach shared his thoughts on the young player’s ascent.

According to Severin Luthi, Alcaraz’s Wimbledon hit with Roger Federer was the first time he had ever laid eyes on the world No. 2 in 2019.

However, when he offered his initial thoughts on the Spaniard, the Swiss tennis coach gave an explanation for his desire to be “cautious” while making predictions about Alcaraz.

“He is still 21 years old, it is incredible,” Luthi said on the Tennis Legend podcast after the world No. 2 lifted the French Open championship on Sunday.

It’s true that I believed Zverev would prevail after the third set. Once again, I was mistaken to believe that he was stronger. The fact that he has won three Grand Slams at his age is amazing. It’s insane.

Then, Federer’s 15-year coach recalled their first encounter, which was with 16-year-old Alcaraz. “I don’t know him very well, we trained with him once at Wimbledon,” he went on. That occurred while he was still a junior.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, who participated in the tour throughout Federer’s early career, organized the practice session. And after witnessing the Spaniard in action, Luthi fell for the Alcaraz hype. He continued, “I recall Ferrero telling us he was good.”

“He was already extremely good at the time, but it’s amazing that he has such a successful career already. I use forecasting with extreme caution. For me, it seemed unthinkable that Sampras’ 14 Grand Slams could be topped, but three tennis players have now won 20 or more.

While Federer’s former coach refrained from placing a value on Alcaraz’s potential, he did imply that the 21-year-old might follow in the footsteps of his former pupil.

“Success also depends on other players; you need to be lucky.” We’ll watch his career to see what he does. It’s great now. His future is bright right now,” he remarked.
