Actions speak louder than words, and in the 115 days since Michael Beale’s dismissal,

there have been very few words and even fewer actions. “The appointment of the head

coach is going to be a marker,” Dodds said. “That will speak for itself.

I’m not going to speak for other people because I don’t think it needs any kind of statement.”

How disorganized. You might argue that the Sunderland hierarchy’s decisions have

been vindicated by pursuing candidates who have since been enticed elsewhere,

if you were to be fair to them—which is probably far more than they deserve right now.

But that’s clinging to a very pitiful collection of straws.

The less flattering appraisal of the past four months is that three failed attempts to find a

new manager have followed a severely damaging period

of stasis during which Dodds’ disastrous temporary reign destroyed Sunderland’s

league position and created a fully justified sense of anger and frustration within the fanbase.

Missing out on one potential appointee can be considered unfortunate.

Two, and the situation becomes worrying. Make it three, however,

and the sense of deep-rooted problems being repeatedly exposed becomes impossible to ignore.

A quick recap. Having had Will Still on their radar for more than a year, and certainly long before

Michael Beale was appointed, never mind let go, Kristjaan Speakman and

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus thought they had their man a fortnight ago.

Initial talks with the 31-year-old had gone well – or so they thought – and Sunderland

officials were even planning how, and when, Still’s appointment would be confirmed.

Then Lens came to the table, and Still was instead persuaded to head back to Ligue 1.

The Englishman’s camp claim he had reservations about Sunderland’s ambition and

the make-up of the backroom structure he was going to have to work with;

the Black Cats are adamant that was all agreed and Lens simply offered more money and the

chance to manage in the top half of the French top-flight. As ever with these things,

the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

After searching elsewhere and evaluating three or four strong contenders, Louis-Dreyfus felt secure

enough in the course of events last Friday to declare in a statement that an appointment was “imminent.

” He was obviously jumping the gun, unless he has a very different meaning of “imminent” than the rest of us.

At that point, Pascal Jansen was thought to be the front-runner,

and it is known that the former AZ Alkmaar manager was discussed with last week.

But by this week’s beginning, rumors were circulating that he was no longer being considered.

Why? Although accounts indicate there were misgivings on both sides that ultimately

meant both were content to walk away, that is still not quite apparent.

It’s Liam Rosenior here. Until Dodds’ temporary tenure ended, the former Hull manager

remained firmly established at the KC Stadium. Therefore, it is difficult to understand how

Beale could have been a viable candidate during Speakman and Louis-Dreyfus’

“strategic planning” period, unless they had a very powerful crystal ball.

Still, he was undoubtedly under consideration during the first part of this week,

with known first discussions. Similar to Still, Sunderland executives were reasonably

optimistic about ultimately reaching an agreement. However, Burnley was holding out for a chance,

and although Rosenior is by no means certain to get the
