Russell Martin and EFL on Important announcements and premier League promotion
Southampton could look to the newly-relegated Premier League sides for potential cut-price signings this summer.
Russell Martin will be trying to escape what happened to the other three clubs;
after being promoted from the Championship in the 2022–2023 season,
all three teams had to immediately return to the lower division.
Particularly bad performances came from Burnley and Sheffield United,
while Luton Town fought valiantly but finally lost to relegation.
In order to prepare for the Premier League, Southampton needs to add
players to their roster. After successful loan stints in the last campaign,
there is optimism that Flynn Downes and
Ryan Fraser will both make a permanent return.
By selecting 38-year-old Russell Martin as manager last summer,
the team took a chance and allowed the relatively inexperienced
coach to impose his possession philosophy on a team that had been
built around counterattacking for the previous four years.
Although it was always going to be a challenging assignment,
Martin was able to promote the team via the Championship play-offs
and in the process get the team to follow his philosophy.
Stability is much-needed after the club went through three managers in
the 2022–2023 season, and in Martin, it appears they have that.
However, off-field accomplishments may have been the former
Swansea City manager‘s greatest accomplishment, and Southampton
CEO Phil Parson’s most recent remarks undoubtedly support this theory.
