Pep Guardiola’s contract is slated to expire in2025, thus Manchester City will likely be searching for

a new head coach the following summer. Rumour has it that they have already begun looking at potential candidates.

Alonso, who is now coaching Bayer Leverkusen, is supposedly being courted by Manchester City to become their new head coach. It is believed that Pep Guardiola will step down following the

2024–2025 campaign.

Guardiola, whose contract with City is about to expire, has made multiple indications that he want

to quit the team. He is currently in the final year of his contract. And should he really depart next summer, it’s said that City will try to sign Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool, who the Reds appear to have rejected this winter.

After revealing his intention to depart the Reds two years ahead of schedule, Alonso emerged as the

clear favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

However, following weeks of conjecture on Alonso’s decision between Liverpool and Bayern Munich,

he ultimately chose to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, hoping to expand his head coaching experience following an outstanding Bundesliga campaign in which his team went unbeaten.

Man City are reportedly eyeing Xabi Alonso to take over in 2025

Alonso was a fan favourite when playing for the Reds and helped them win the Champions League. Should Carlo Ancelotti depart, Alonso has also been linked to the Real Madrid position. A transfer

to Liverpool’s fiercest rivals during the last seven years, though, would quickly destroy his reputation with supporters, even though the Spaniard would probably have to decline the position if it were given.

Football Transfers was the first to claim that Alonso would be considered for the Guardiola position, with the City administration reportedly “convinced” by his playmaking and management style.

Alonso prefers the 3-4-2-1 system that Guardiola has previously used, which many thought would be

a problem if he had taken over at Liverpool. The Reds players would have made it challenging by

using the full-backs in place of wingers, forcing players like Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah to play out

of position.
