Kansas City Chiefs star opens up about Travis Kelce retirement talk

Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs’ top tight end, was linked to retirement after the team won their second consecutive Super Bowl triumph in February.

Kelce put a stop to the rumours immediately following Kansas City’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers. He then signed a two-year contract extension worth $34.25 million, effectively ending those talks.

With the 2024 NFL season swiftly coming, Chiefs great defensive tackle Chris Jones discussed Kelce’s retirement rumours and his own plan for hanging up his cleats.

“He’s got like four or five more years and what is he talking about, right?” Jones spoke about Kelce to ESPN. “We cannot let TK leave. It’s like we have to retire together. Give me at least six, four years, then we’ll talk about it.”

Jones, 29, signed a five-year, $158.75 million contract with the Chiefs this past March. This puts him under contract until the 2028 season. He appears to be planning to retire after his contract expires.

In the middle of the NFL’s latest dynasty, Kansas City hopes to become the first team in league history to three-peat during the Super Bowl era.

Kelce’s extension, combined with Jones’ re-signing before of the NFL free agency period, paints the story of a squad on the verge of regaining momentum.

The Chiefs are currently the odds-on favourites to win the Lombardi Trophy this season. The 49ers, as previously mentioned, follow them in line.

“Once you begin to think about things like that, you’re getting to feed the mind those types of thoughts,” Jones explained. “I don’t even want my mind to even go that far to the R word.”
