The Boston Celtics held off their opponents on the road to establish a commanding 3-0 series lead in the NBA Finals with a 106-99 victory, despite a late charge by the Dallas Mavericks.

Although Dallas got out to a quick start and kept the game close as the seconds passed, the Celtics maintained their momentum from the third quarter into the fourth.

With just over four minutes left in the game, Mavericks star Luka Doncic fouled out, depriving Dallas of a crucial shooter.

The officials penalized him for a blocking foul in the closing seconds of the game because of his sixth foul, which occurred late in the game and kept him off the field.

After Kristaps Porzingis, a 7-foot-2 Latvian, was ruled out of the game around two hours beforehand due to an unusual tendon injury he sustained in Game 2, Boston also advanced to 10-1 in these playoffs without the Latvian.

It’s unclear how Porzingis will fare in the remaining games of the series, but it might not matter. Not one of the 156 teams who faced a 3-0 disadvantage in the NBA playoffs has come back to win the series.

Thirteen years after the only other rally to rival it in the NBA Finals ignited Dallas’ march to its sole title against Miami, the Mavs nearly pulled off a wild comeback to avoid the massive hole.

But the absence of Doncic hurt the team late as the Mavericks only hit three of their last eight shots in the game.

Things now look bleak for the Mavericks – who now face the hill of trying to become the first team in NBA history to come back from a 3-0 deficit.

Game Four – which will either see the Mavericks extend the series or watch the Celtics win a record-setting 18th title – takes place on Friday night in Dallas.
