Chelsea accepts a £38 million fee as Atletico Madrid prepares to conduct medicals.

Last night,

Football Insider released an exclusive in which the owners of Chelsea allegedly expressed “fear” over losing Conor Gallagher to a free agent.

It is mentioned that he has one year remaining on his contract,

meaning he can speak to international clubs as early as January 2025.

Atletico Madrid, who are currently on a tight budget and would probably want to see if they can entice the midfield player with a big contract offer rather than pay the £40–50 million Chelsea will demand,

has already reported interest in the player.

Aston Villa and Spurs, two Premier League teams who have also been connected,

would not be allowed to agree on a pre-contract until the following summer,

so if they are concerned that one of them will transfer,

their only choice would be to pay the amount now.

Overall, a perplexing report

We’re not sure how to interpret this.

Though we’re sure the board is worried, they probably already know about this.

This is a major contributing factor to their desire to fire Gallagher.

They realize that as soon as this window closes,

they probably won’t receive anything for him, profit or no profit.

The most that they could hope for would be a team that wants him in the summer on a free agent contract,

paying a little amount to acquire an advantage over everyone else.

However, it will pale in comparison to their expectations.

We’re not sure why, exactly, you would need a “well placed source” to discover that the Blues are concerned about the possibility of him leaving for nothing.

Why can’t we just give Gallagher what he wants financially and sign a significant player?

He’s happy to say that, so move on and offer him whatever the teams that are interested in him have to offer.

This was something that ought to have been resolved long before there was any chance of him walking away for free.
