Breaking: Vandals destroys the Football fan museum
Graffiti on a Grade II listed museum building has raised concerns about
additional vandalism in the vicinity.
The head of the Fans Museum Sunderland, which is housed in the old Monkwearmouth station in the city, Michael Ganley, is concerned
that it will only be a “matter of time” before the antisocial behavior gets worse.
The building’s owner, Network Rail, promised to investigate
the occurrence and visit the location to evaluate the graffiti.
The building’s targeting was deemed “sad” by the Sunderland City Council.
Mr. Ganley stated that the museum building and the platform
across from it had been the focus of frequent graffiti for the previous six weeks.
The 53-year-old continued, “It’s just a matter of time before it goes further.”
“A truly lovely piece of local history may be lost.

“To see the graffiti doesn’t shine a positive light on Sunderland
when the trains are going by and all of the metros are going by.”
The neighborhood was “in uproar” about the vandalism, he continued.
In addition to requesting that antisocial behavior be reported,
Sunderland City Council said, “It is sad to see that vandals have
targeted one of the city’s historic buildings in this way.”
In addition to having a sizable collection of football memorabilia,
the museum engages in community outreach.
Before the graffiti appeared, Mr. Ganley claimed that criminals had
broken into the building nine times in the course of six months last year.
After assuming the building’s lease in 2017, Mr. Ganley declared
the impact to be “soul-destroying”.
It’s really difficult, he remarked. It’s really difficult. However,
I have devoted my entire life to the museum.
In order to “deter opportunists” and improve the appearance of his lease,
he said, he would like to include the opposing platform.
