Kelly’s move to Newcastle might start a sequence of events that leads to Ben Godfrey’s departure from Everton this summer.

HITC is aware that Kelly rejected last-minute attempts by AC Milan and Roma to sabotage The Magpies

transaction, having previously given his word to Howe and company.

The two Serie A players might now turn their attention to Godfrey. Godfrey has been admired in Italy four years

after spending £20 million to join Everton from Norwich, and he has declined offers to stay longer at Goodison

Park.

We reported back in January, meanwhile, that Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Luton and Leeds were all keen

on the versatile defender. Only one of that quartet – Forest – will be playing Premier League football next term,

however, defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final seemingly denying Daniel Farke from reuniting

with his former Canaries colossus at Elland Road.

“You can speak about the best centre-backs in the world now but, at 19 and 20, they will have made mistakes,”

Farke said back in 2019, one year before Godfrey’s big-money move to Merseyside.

“The best ones learn. Ben is playing without mistakes, and that is outstanding.

“He is a pretty emotional player. I like that a lot because it means you are capable of finding another gear.”
