In order to assist with the founding of the Windrush-Sunderland

Football Club, a new junior football team, SAFC has partnered

with the African Caribbean Community Association North East,

a Sunderland-based organization.

The team got its name from the 1948 arrival of HMT

Windrush in the port of Tilbury, which carried hundreds of

immigrants from the Caribbean’s former British colonial islands who

had heeded the government of the United Kingdom’s appeal to aid in post-war reconstruction.

“We first got involved with the Association as part of the

Premier League’s annual Academy under 12s Christmas Truce project,

SAFC Head of Education Don Peattie said. Since the 75th anniversary

celebrations had recently concluded,

the project focused on Windrush. The focus of our study was Walter Tull, a professional football player

who served as the first black officer in World War One.

He was also of Caribbean descent; his parents were from Barbados.

Our lads made the decision to design some t-shirts honoring Walter Tull’s life and struggle.

“The goal was to attempt to raise funds in order to establish a local football team for the Association.”

“Our first team auctioned off the t-shirts they wore during the warm-up

before their match versus Norwich at the Stadium of Light in order to generate funds.

“The Association received all of the funds raised to assist them in

establishing a team with the goal of joining the Russell Foster Youth League.”

Families of the Association also welcomed their children to the Academy of Light, where they played a game with the SAFC juniors and then

enjoyed a post-match celebration.

The club’s dream of forming their own youth team is almost ready to come true,

and they have now also given the Association a set of strips.

According to association head Lucky Pemu, “As a lasting legacy of the

Windrush arrival, the team is already training weekly every

Saturday to play against other local teams and will go on to register in the

Russell Foster league for this coming season (2024) and future seasons.”

Don continued, “We are thrilled that we could assist the African Caribbean Community Association and have been impressed with some of the training sessions they have held so far. We are also impressed by the enthusiasm that our partnership has generated among its members, with a number of girls as well as young boys eager to participate.”

It is critical that we all acknowledge, value, and celebrate the contributions that a variety of varied groups have made to our society on a local and national level.

“At Sunderland AFC, we’re proud to support inclusivity and diversity.”

On Saturday June 22 the Association is celebrating Windrush Day at the Beacon of light. The event is open to anyone and visitors can enjoy an afternoon of Afro-Caribbean food, fashion, music and dancing.
