Done deal: Newcastle has signed a free agent with 42 Premier League goals.

The Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly of interest.

He was formerly praised as “incredible” by one Pep Guardiola.

On June 9, 2024, the Sunday Mirror (page 73) reported that Newcastle was considering a bid for the 27-year-old.

After departing Manchester City in 2017, Iheanacho spent seven years with the Foxes, winning the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Championship along the way.

However, he was released from the team when his contract expired.

It is unlikely to send hearts racing throughout Tyneside to sign a player on a free transfer who only managed five goals in the Championship the previous season.

Context still seems vital, though.

Those goals came from just five second-tier starts in the previous campaign,

and Iheanacho isn’t expected to be Newcastle’s first choice.

For Eddie Howe’s team, goals are not too much of an issue.

In the Premier League the previous season,

only Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool scored more goals.

Even yet, there is a serious problem with their forwards’ dependability.

Without a certain, Alexander Isak will be first choice,

but he has never been able to stay healthy for an extended period of time. Callum Wilson, the backup, may also be going this summer.

In 196 games, Iheanacho has scored 42 goals in the Premier League.

More significantly, since starting to play English football in 2015, he has only missed four games due to injury (via Transfermarkt).

Newcastle could do much worse as an inexpensive backup.
