Celtic consider transfer deal for Stuart Armstrong from Southampton

Stuart Armstrong was unexpectedly released by Southampton at the end of the season,

and Celtic is thinking of making a move to re-sign him.

Senior journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Armstrong, 32, has surfaced as a potential

possibility for the Scottish title winners and is very much on their radar in an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

But, according to insiders, Brendan Rodgers wants his club to have a significant effect in Europe,

thus he will be searching for significant support in the transfer market.

Because of this, the team will first consider players other than Armstrong,

especially younger prospects who they believe have the potential to improve at Parkhead.

Football Insider was informed by finance expert Kieran Maguire that Celtic’s Champions League

qualification will have provided “rocket boosters” to their budget.

After leaving Southampton, Armstrong became available on a free transfer,

creating the chance for him to rejoin Celtic after a six-year absence.

After spending £7 million to join the English team in 2018,

the midfielder went on to play 214 games for the team in both the Premier League and the Championship.

In the just concluded season, he made 45 appearances,

contributing seven assists and six goals to help propel the Saints back into the Premier League.

Armstrong won four SPFL titles, two Scottish Cups,

two Scottish League Cups, and was a featured player in both the Champions League and the Europa League during his time at Parkhead.

The combination of his winning experience, his time in Europe,

and his prior solid fan base building have made a comeback to the scene possible this summer.

Armstrong is one of two former players that Celtic is thinking about bringing back this summer.

Kieran Tierney would also love to come back to Parkhead, according to sources who spoke to Football Insider.
