Chiefs DE BJ Thompson reportedly ‘awake and responsive’ after cardiac arrest

Following Thursday’s event, backup defensive end BJ Thompson has a ‘positive’ prognosis.

Out of Stephen F. Austin and Baylor, Thompson was chosen by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the NFL Draft the previous season. Last season, he played in just one game, mostly on special teams, and recorded two tackles.

This week is the last week of OTAs for the Chiefs. Prior to the official training camp’s July start date, a mandatory minicamp is scheduled to begin on June 11.

Chiefs’ Thompson awake after seizure and cardiac arrest

BJ Thompson, a defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, is “awake and responsive” following a seizure and cardiac arrest during a team meeting.

Following a Chiefs meeting on Thursday, Thompson, 25, was admitted to the hospital.

According to Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs’ vice president of sports medicine and performance, “he’s headed in the absolute right direction,” on Friday.

“Our players, our security staff, everybody involved, coaches and staff, they were phenomenal in handling the crisis.”

Following the medical situation, the Chiefs postponed their planned practice session until Friday, with head coach Andy Reid and players holding separate media sessions.

Thompson was a member of the Super Bowl winning team last season and was taken in the fifth round

of the NFL Draft.

He was a member of the Chiefs squad that last week celebrated winning the Super Bowl by visiting the White House.

Rick Burkholder, the vice president of sports health and performance for the Chiefs, informed reporters on Friday that Thompson had been placed on a ventilator to help him breathe throughout the night after the incident at a nearby hospital, where he had been highly sedated. However, the ventilator has since been removed.

Burkholder stated, “He’s alert and awake.” “He’s headed in the absolute right direction.”

The Chiefs will start a required mini-camp on Tuesday as part of their off-season conditioning routine.
