Real Madrid set to sign 19-year-old goalkeeping prospect from Atletico Madrid

Sergio Mestre, a teenage defender from Atletico Madrid’s development squad, is poised to join Real Madrid’s ranks, specifically their C team, according to AS.

It is unusual for Real Madrid to spend in a player who hasn’t played much in a year and a half. Mestre, on the other hand, presents a unique instance.

Despite his 12-year stint with Atletico Madrid, Mestre has struggled to find substantial playing time in the last 18 months.

Neither Fernando Torres, the coach of the Juvenil A team, nor Luis Garcia, the manager of the reserve squad, had much faith in him. However, Real Madrid spotted promise.

The directors of La Fabrica have showed extraordinary faith in this 19-year-old custodian, since they have no concerns about signing him despite his little activity in the latter stages of his development.

His climb through the ranks was rapid, and he eventually reached the end of his young career. Torres had already chosen another custodian from the youth system, so Mestre was sidelined.

In an attempt to resuscitate his hopes, the club elevated him to the reserve squad, but Garcia did not give him any opportunity. Mestre played only two games during this time, both in the Youth League, due to a teammate’s injury.

Despite the difficulties, Atletico’s young management attempted to prolong Mestre’s contract for two years, providing the first year without a specific destination.

Mestre declined the offer, citing a lack of a clear plan and displeasure from spending so much time on the bench.

Despite training independently, Mestre drew interest from a number of clubs, including Arsenal, Brentford, and Watford.

Watford even booked tickets and accommodations to watch him train with their first squad for a few weeks. However, Atletico denied permission for the visit. In March, amidst the uncertainty, Real Madrid intervened. Mestre made the decision to swap allegiances and join Real Madrid after extensive conversations.
