Sunderland have been claimed to have a three-man shortlist for their vacant managerial post, but according to the Sunderland Echo, two of those mooted as being on it are ‘not under consideration’.

The Black Cats have been searching for a new manager for several months now.

After dismissing Michael Beale in February, the team started looking for a permanent manager and appointed Mike Dodds as temporary manager.

Although they had their eye on Will Still, he appears to have accepted a position at Lens, and as the hunt goes on, former Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky has been connected.

But according to rumors, Sunderland currently has a three-man shortlist that includes Dave Challinor, Stephen Robinson, and Pascal Jansen.

It is suggested, however, that rumors that Robinson and Challinor are being considered are unfounded, as the two are “not under consideration.” Challinor enhanced his reputation this season by leading Stockport County to promotion to League One as League Two champions. Robinson, the manager of St. Mirren, has garnered praise for his management and performance in the Scottish Premiership; the 49-year-old has led both Motherwell and St. Mirren in the top flight. It is unclear if the two could be Sunderland employees, as there are now divergent rumors regarding their involvement at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s Dave Challinor and Stephen Robinson head coach stance

Although St. Mirren manager Robinson and Stockport manager Challinor have both been strongly connected to the Black Cats, Sunderland executives are still looking for a Michael Beale replacement.

Although Challinor, the former manager of Hartlepool, is well regarded in the industry and has earned three promotions, the most recent of which occurred this season in League Two, he has not managed a League One match and lacks Championship experience.

St Mirren qualified for Europe this season for the first time since 1987, and Robinson has done a great job with them.

However, neither manager is vying for the position at the Stadium of Light.

Although it is known that Sunderland’s management has evaluated former AZ head coach Pascal Jensen, there are still other contenders vying to succeed Michael Beale.

Two long-term Sunderland prospects are almost finalising offers from other employers. Following the confirmation of Franck Haise’s transfer to Nice on Thursday morning, Will Still is expected to assume leadership of Lens. According to recent reports, Still’s Lens appointment will be confirmed this weekend or early the following week.

Meanwhile, Rene Maric appears more and more likely to move up from Bayern Munich’s Under-19 team to join Vincent Kompany’s first team.

Liam Rosenior is one manager who is still available. The former Hull City manager reportedly discussed the St Andrew’s opening with Birmingham City, but he is reportedly waiting for a Championship position.

Birmingham have instead today appointed Tottenham’s senior assistant coach Chris Davies as their new leader, replacing former Sunderland head coach Tony Mowbray after he stepped down from the post due to sickness.
