When the Premier League returns to the scene next season, one thing is for sure: we will need to spend,

and we need to spend well. But what are the positions that are critical that we need to fill?

These days, it is just impossible to stay with the team that helped you rise from the

Championship to the Premier League.

Where do Saints stand and what has to be improved? Most promoted clubs have the

foundations but are far from the genuine stuff.

Early June makes it difficult to determine exactly where we need to strengthen,

so for the purposes of this article, I’m going to assume that Fraser Richardson, Flynn Downes

and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all return to St. Mary’s permanently and that everyone else stays.

If they don’t, we’ll need to think about who would replace them.

First on the list is goalkeeper, where Gavin Bazunu is unlikely to feature much before the end

of the next season, Alex McCarthy performed admirably at the end of the campaign,

but he has finally proven to be unreliable as a number one, and Joe Lumley has never played

Therefore, we need to bring in someone to replace the number one seat.

I imagine that we will be examining loan signings and those who are on the bench at other

Premier League teams; there are a number of worthy candidates, but Russell Martin will likely

prefer a keeper who can play with his feet.

There’s no doubt about it—someone with the most extensive experience is required.

Joe Lumley and Alex McCarthy are merely backups, so keeping Alex McCarthy at number

two would not be a bad idea. However, given that McCarthy has been linked to Liverpool,

who would you want to sit on the bench next season, if you were McCarthy?

The defense is the next area that needs improvement. We need a new center defender,

someone who can lead and organize; Conor Coady might be a good fit. We don’t necessary

need a player who can start 38 games a season; we just need someone who can step in and provide something we don’t currently have.
We also need a left back because none of the current players at the club are truly good enough

to play in the Premier League; Romain Perraud had inconsistent play in his two seasons there,

Jack Stephens isn’t good enough, Ryan Manning isn’t good enough, and Juan Larios might be good enough,

but he’s still not sure. For now, we need to cover the position and wait to see if he improves.

We have a lot of alternatives in the midfield, but none of them have much Premier League experience.

James Ward Prowse’s return would be fantastic, but if he or someone else does, we still need another

veteran leader in the team.
We still lack a player in terms of quality and quantity,

but we still have options and a vacancy for a wide player, so I don’t think this is a big deal.

The last striker we need is a central forward. Che Adams appears likely to leave,

though he might stay. In his four years in the Premier League, he hasn’t really

demonstrated that he can score more than ten goals. While I would be happy if he stayed,

you need a forward who can score ten goals a season, and he isn’t that player.

These are the six important additions we must make, provided no one departs.

Should a significant person depart, we will need to reevaluate.
