He wants to stay‘ – Club director dismisses Aston Villa transfer claim

Denzel Dumfries, who is reportedly being targeted by Aston Villa, wants to stay at Inter Milan, according to directo

Piero Ausilio. However, with one year left on the defender’s contract, the team will not take any chances.

Unai Emery has been linked to admiring Dutch international Dumfries as he looks to bolster his squad’s ability and

experience in order to contend in both the Premier League and the Champions League the following season. He may

be just what Villa needs, having won the Italian Cup twice and finishing first in Serie A.  However, additional

information has surfaced, and it is not encouraging reading for those who had hoped that his summer transfer to

Villa Park would go through. Speaking with Sky Sports Italia, Ausilio disclosed that the results of talks point to

Dumfries’ wish to remain in their current location.

“I spoke with him recently, and aside from the contract situation which we will verify over the next few days, he

confirmed to me that he wants to stay,” said the director. “If any

opportunities should arise, we will evaluate them, but as of today he is an Inter player and he confirmed to me that

he wants to remain.”

If the full-back were to depart Serie A, the Italian media believed Villa would be the top contender for his signature,

however other teams like Manchester United are rumored to have remained in the running. Although it will be

Simone Inzaghi’s fourth season as coach, Ausilio clarified that his renewal at Inter will eventually be part of a bigger

goal to stay stable at the top of Serie A. The purpose is to have stability. “We simply want to be competitive and

establish our status in football.”The team is already strong as it is, if there are some opportunities then we will be

there, otherwise we are ready for the start of the season.” Dumfries’ attention has been taken off of his club career for

the time being as he is presently training with the Netherlands national squad in preparation for the European

Championships in Germany this summer.
