St Mirren head coach Stephen Robinson has emerged as a surprising new candidate to take on the vacancy at Sunderland

Alan Nixeon via Patreon reports that Stephen Robinson, the head coach of St Mirren, has emerged as an unexpected new contender to fill the Sunderland position.

Since firing Michael Beale in February after just 12 games in charge, Sunderland has been without a manager. The former Reims manager Will Still was highly sought after by the Stadium of Light team, but it is reported that the Belgian coach will reject the offer in favor of sticking in Ligue 1 and joining RC Lens.

Then, Rene Maric, the coach of Bayern Munich U19, and Raphael Wicky, the former manager of Young Boys, were among the most frequently mentioned names. However, current sources suggest that Vincent Kompany, the new head coach of Bayern Munich, will be giving the latter a promotion.

Scottish Premiership coach Robinson has just entered the rumor mill, but former player and Football League World analyst Carlton Palmer thinks it would be a major risk to lure the 49-year-old to the Wearside team.

Palmer remarked on FLW, “The Northern Irishman took the Buddies into Europe, and back-to-back top six finishes.” However, I believe that this would be an absurd risk. However, the current process means that Sunderland is running out of applicants for the position, so they will have to take a chance on a player who is relatively new to both management and the Championship.

Robinson, who has managed Oldham Athletic, Motherwell, and Morecambe, initially joined St Mirren in 2022. The Buddies have led for 103 games; they have won 35 and lost 47. They placed fifth at the end of the 2023–2024 campaign.
