EARLY In the English Premier League, Scottish players like Billy Gilmour of Brighton and

SPFL teams are thinking about reducing the age at which academy graduates can sign full-time contracts.

 

Scottish footballers can only become professionals if they turn 16 before they may do so,

and their clubs can only get training compensation money if they depart before that time.

However, it’s said that SPFL teams are eager for the regulations to alter,

requiring professionals above the age of 14 to pay full transfer costs,

in an effort to improve their prospects of holding onto their best young players.

 

Over the past few years, English Premier League and

Championship teams have been looking more and more at Scotland’s academies.

 

Signing foreign nationals under the age of 18 has become more difficult for them due to new laws enacted following Brexit.

 

The SFA has reportedly been urged by Scotland’s elite clubs to examine the nation’s strategies for developing young talent,

however a timeline for this study has not yet been made public.

 

Gilmour, the Scotland star and former youngster of Rangers, recently talked about how,

shortly before turning sixteen in 2017, he moved to Chelsea.

 

The ex-Norwich City midfielder, who now plays for Roberto De Zerbi‘s Seagulls,

admitted that his omission from the Gers squad for a Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies

when he was only 15 – made the decision to move to West London a lot easier.

 

He also reflected on a special moment he shared with legendary Light Blues kitman Jimmy Bell before making his Ibrox exit.
