Paul Warne holds triple transfer talks as Derby County plot ‘world class’ signings

As the head coach of Derby County plans his initial moves in this summer’s transfer market,

Paul Warne reports that he met three players on Monday.

When the market opens in nine days, the Rams are free to negotiate.

The team is keen to bolster the backbone of the squad by adding two forwards, a new midfielder, and a new goalkeeper.

Since January, Derby has been organizing their summer activities with the expectation of returning to the Championship,

which they did following a spectacular promotion from League One. Since the end of the season,

recruitment meetings have been ongoing, and Warne has had meetings with players who are being pursued by other clubs.

“All football fans want to see their club make signings on day one, but that isn’t how it is,” stated Warne,

who was a guest on TalkSport today.

I’ve met players who, surprise of surprises, other teams are also interested in.

You either need to have the largest purse or, perhaps, the greatest personality to get the ones that are selected early in the window.

“You meet players, you try and financially put something together that’s competitive.

They meet other clubs and then everyone seems to go on holiday conveniently when there’s a decision to be made.

For example, a player has now gone to Portugal for two weeks and it’s ‘Look Paul,

nothing’s going to happen for the next two weeks, OK?’

“And in the meantime, I’m constantly reaching out to the player and the agent,

so it feels like next week you could sign five players or it might take another three weeks, and that’s sort of where we’re at.

Yesterday I was in meetings with the chief exec (Stephen Pearce), and the head of recruitment (Mark Thomas).

“The day before that I was in meetings and I met three players on Monday, and it’s just a constant thing.

And today on the way down here (to Talksport) I’ve been texting players, texting my current players.

It’s just a constant battle to get people in.”
