After the Hammers midfielder made an impression during a season-long loan with the team, it is widely known that the Saints are eager to sign the player to a permanent contract.
The 25-year-old appeared to be receptive to continuing with the Saints and was an important member of Russell Martin’s team that advanced to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs [Daily Echo, May 13].

Southampton recently revealed their official retained list for the 2024–2025 season, so it’s possible that they made room at St Mary’s Stadium for Downes as well. Adam Armstrong is one of the players who is departing.

Even though Downes and Armstrong are two very different individuals, the Saints, as a freshly promoted team, will probably play considerably more defensively next season, giving  Southampton’s intense pursuit of the player, Julen Lopetegui might not get the opportunity to collaborate with Downes before to his definitive departure from the London club.

As the Saints won promotion to the Premier League, the 25-year-old made 31 league starts and established himself as a crucial part of Martin’s system.
After moving from Swansea City to London Stadium in July 2022, he had a respectable first season there. However, David Moyes sent him out on loan, and the club may now regret that choice.
Still, it wasn’t the most bizarre choice. Due to the transfer, Moyes was left with only Edson Alvarez as a pure defensive midfielder, which necessitated the January transfer window loan of Kalvin Phillips.

One may argue that the Manchester City player’s attempt to salvage his career was a slap in the face to Downes.

If they haven’t already, the Hammers might need to start getting ready for Downes’ departure.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have beaten out a club that has won two titles to secure a new player.
