Midfield maestro twice linked with Portsmouth finally accept to join Pompey on free transfer amid Wrexham interest – Personal terms agreed

Jamie Lindsay, a previous Pompey target with a lot of documentation, is moving this summer.

The midfield player, with whom former Blues manager Danny Cowley was strongly associated twice

while he was in charge at Fratton Park, is heading out of Rotherham.

The Millers had presented a fresh contract offer to the Scot,

who they were eager to keep playing in fresh York Stadium.

However, the conditions of the agreement could not be worked out, so Lindsay was free to leave this summer.

Wrexham, the newest team in League One, has already been linked to the 28-year-old; back in January,

the Racecourse Ground team expressed interest in him.

Lindsay will leave Rotherham – who announced the signings of former Blues duo Joe Rafferty and

Sean Raggett last month – after 167 appearances and eight goals for the club.

But those Millers stats could have been a lot fewer had the Blues been successful with

their pursuit of the player in both the 2022 transfer windows.

The midfield player was wanted by Pompey on the last day of the January transfer window.

Lindsay or Lewis Wing of Middlesbrough, another player who was strongly associated,

was never acquired, though.

The signing of Aiden O’Brien on a free transfer ended up being the only transaction the Blues had on that deadline day.

The summer of 2022 marked the Blues’ return to the game.

However, the former Ross County player inked a two-year contract to stay in South Yorkshire,

so their inquiries were turned down once more.

In January of that year, Paul Warne, the manager of Rotherham at the time, stated:

“I don’t think a bid would be noteworthy enough to get our attention.”

It’s not as if Premier League teams are making serious, well-funded bids that we have to reject.

What would I do with £200,000 to £300,000 if someone paid me that much for Jamie?

On the final day of the window, it doesn’t seem good to me.

After Cowley tried to sign one of Warne’s players from Rotherham—it’s safe to infer that this was Lindsay—Warne,

who is now at Derby, later disclosed that he had a grudge against Cowley.

After the Rams’ November 2022 visit to Fratton Park, which resulted in some touchline shenanigans,

he said, “I just had an issue with him (Danny) about him approaching one of my players (at Rotherham),

which I wasn’t best pleased with.”

‘I am a bit stubborn like that. I can’t let things go. You’ve got to fight your corner, haven’t you?

Commenting on Lindsay’s Rotherham exit, Millers boss Steve Evans said:

‘He wanted terms I wasn’t prepared to ask the board to do.

It’s as simple as that. I’ll still love the kid and he’ll probably play against us next season.

He’s true Scottish blood like myself so from that point of view it was nice to work with him for a couple of weeks but now he moves on.’
