Cody Gakpo admits the real reason he didn’t join Leeds United was really ‘strange’.
In previous years, Leeds United have missed out on some outstanding acquisitions.
Josko Gvardiol and Rodrigo De Paul, for example, were quite close to joining Leeds, but their agreements fell through.
Another player who got very close to Elland Road was Cody Gakpo.
Recall that Leeds was quite interested in Gakpo on deadline day in the summer of 2022.
Gakpo has now discussed his decision to remain at PSV in an interview with ESPN, claiming he had an odd motivation for doing so.
Gakpo explained why he turned down Leeds, saying that he had promised to sign with the team if he scored two goals in what would have been his last game for PSV.
However, he ended up scoring a hat-trick, which convinced him to stay.
“Someone could think I’m weird. Leeds entered the race, so I could move to Southampton, but PSV wanted me to stay.
I gave God all three of my options. I would travel to Southampton if I scored one goal. Gakpo stated, “If I scored three, I would stay at PSV.
If I scored twice, I would move to Leeds.
As Gakpo points out, although his choice seemed a little odd at first, it ended up working out.
Gakpo’s decision to remain at PSV was, in fact, a wise one.
The Dutch striker is now playing for Liverpool in the Premier League and Champions League.
while Leeds is in the Championship for the second year running.
