Breaking: Southampton captain Parnell announces retirement

Rosie Parnell, the captain of Southampton, is quitting the professional game.

The Saints sent out an official club press release to WSL Full-Time this afternoon with the news.

Prior to turning 14 and enrolling at the Reading Center of Excellence, Parnell was raised in Southampton. She later played adult league football for Oxford United and London Bees before moving back to Southampton in 2019. Parnell has assisted The Saints in realizing their goal of qualifying for the elite game since joining the team again. In Southampton’s first two seasons in the Barclays Women’s Championship, she went on to make 33 appearances.

Parnell stated, “It’s an easy decision because when you know it’s right, you know and for me mentally and physically, I know it’s the right time,” following her retirement announcement. But since making the choice in January, I’ve had a difficult few months, to top it off with an injury that has prevented me from contributing to the team’s successful conclusion as I had hoped.

“I really cannot express how happy I am to have represented this club and led the team to several victories throughout the years. I will always have a particular place in my heart for this club, and I will always be a die-hard Saints fan in the stands.

Parnell played in her last game of her career when Southampton defeated the Adobe Women’s FA Cup 2-0 at
Sunderland back in January.
