Raphael Wicky has agreed to take over as Sunderland manager on a personal basis.

European rumours that Wicky had agreed to a two-year contract to take over as Sunderland’s manager were promptly refuted by Fabrizio Romano.

However, a rumor from the Swiss publication Blick claims that St Gallen,

who placed fifth in the previous Swiss Super League season and qualified for the Europa Conference League the following year,

is betting on Wicky.

In his home country of Switzerland, Wicky is well-known,

having played 75 times for the country before leading Young Boys to the league title and Swiss Cup in the 2022–2023 season.

He left the team in March 2024,

and it looks like he has a lot of options going forward.

However, it’s unclear if Sunderland is actually interested in signing him.

Wicky, according to Romano, was not a contender.

A new pattern indicates one thing concerning the position of manager at Sunderland.

Wicky might soon be added to the group of managers Sunderland has passed over this summer.

And he may have seemed like an intriguing hire to many because Wicky won a few trophies in 2023 and his Young Boys team was praised for their expansive and overwhelming style of play.

Sunderland supporters could be eager for almost anyone to take over at this point in the search so that the team can move forward with their summer transfer plans.

However, it remains to be seen whether Sunderland will select their preferred candidate—after Still,

of course—as managers obviously have other responsibilities in mind.

Although Sunderland is still a massive club with enormous potential,

the fact that managers are selecting other possibilities suggests that the Sunderland manager position might not be as alluring as it once seemed.

The impression that Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman would be challenging to deal with as head coaches persists;

they seem to desire more control than conventional owners,

which may make the manager role completely unworkable.

Supporters would be extremely concerned if Sunderland is without a manager when the summer transfer window opens on June 14.
